Wander down Nicholson St in Carlton and you might just come across this stylish little bakery/patisserie, set apart from all the other shops by the smart black awning outside. Entering it, you’ll find yourself staring at fluffy pastries, freshly baked bread, decadent cakes and glossy handmade chocolates sitting prettily in glass cabinets. Ooh la la…

There’s no doubt you’ll have to start off here with a sandwich or a pastry, for the friendly owners toil all morning in the big, shiny kitchen tucked away behind the counter just to make sure the breads are fresh daily. Biting into two soft, white slices, you’ll wonder how the humble ham and cheese sandwich could taste this good – perhaps it’s because The French Lettuce only uses the best cold cuts and delicious brie cheese as filling?

Then it’s time for sweets, and how tough it is to decide, with little sticky date towers, dark chocolate tarts and glistening flourless orange & almond cakes staring up at you! Settle on the quintessentially Aussie vanilla slice though, and total satisfaction is guaranteed. Dubbed the best in Melbourne by The Age, you’ll understand why as soon as you bite into the delicately iced pastry layer, which crumbles perfectly into lightly sweetened, vanilla-infused custard. Wonderfully flaky, the top layer is just thick enough to give some ‘bite’ and the soft, fluffy custard is fragrant and just the right sweetness. This is the kind of dessert that leaves you wondering where it all went, with icing sugar and pastry all around your mouth - a sure sign you enjoyed it!
