Desserts don’t feature much on traditional Asian menus (fried ice-cream was actually created to suit the western palate!). Rather, sweets are eaten as a snack or during the mains. But that isn’t to say that Asian sweets aren’t a force to be reckoned with. Double-boiled milk desserts from the shops of Hong Kong are divine, shaved ice with rose syrup and various colourful jellies in Jakarta make your mouth water.

At Ondergronds, they’ve taken the key ingredients to delightful Asian desserts such as lychees, durian and peanuts and combined them with the delightful crispness of Dutch pancakes, cooked on a traditional hot stone griddle. What differentiates these Dutch pancakes from your usual hotcake is their subtle but unmistakable fragrance. You’ll be able to wolf these down without any butter or maple syrup. However, you won’t want to miss the fabulous toppings on offer! Each pancake is named for the topping's country of origin and you might have a tough time making a choice. However, these are our recommendations:

The "Indonesian" is a real winner on this list, coupling the sticky richness of cheese, with dark, decadent chocolate. The combination of toppings is perfect – the sticky yellow cheese holds the pancake together and gives it a slightly savoury edge, while the chocolate lends a bittersweet flavour. Eat up while it’s hot!

The "Hong Kong" pancake is another victor – the plump, sweet lychees going unexpectedly well with generous lumps of smooth white chocolate. This one will go down especially well when the cold weather starts to bite, and you’d rather imagine yourself somewhere tropical.
